Developing Graduate-level Writing 2015

This course will help graduate students cope with specific requirements of academic reports and research papers. Topics include problem areas in style and accuracy, word choice, development and organization of ideas, writing abstracts and literature reviews, and incorporating sources and quotations.

Course Outline

 Step 1
 Writing Accuracy in Academic Writing
  • Maintaining a consistent and accurate style
  • Proper usage of words and phrases
  • Avoiding wordiness and overly complex sentences

 Step 2
 Components of a Research Paper
  • The structure of a research paper from "Title" to "Appendix"
 Step 3
Paraphrasing, Quoting, and Referencing Properly
  • The purpose of quoting
  • Being exact and precise
  • The differences between "Quoting" and "Paraphrasing" 
  • Why reference properly?
 Step 4
The Introduction and Thesis Statement
  • Describing background information and problems to be solved
  • Expressing the field and points  
 Step 5
The Body and Conclusion
  • Organizing paragraphs in the body of the paper 
  • Significant findings, implications, and discussion

 Step 6
 Writing the Abstract
  • Informative and descriptive abstracts 
  • Expressions to watch out for
