箱庭で見る政治と外交の物語である。現在進行形で完結はしていない。 タイトルの通り12の国における、12パターンの治世のあり方、王（力）と麒麟（仁愛）の関係、そしてそれらの国々が織りなす「国際関係」を丁寧に綴っていくお話である。新刊予告が出るたびに「この国を書いてくれ！」と思う国があるのだが、対象の国は多いし、作者も全部の国について個別の話を書くつもりはないと宣言しているため、なかなか願い通りにはならない。
王（為政者）としてどうあるべきか。権力を握るとはどういうことなのか。統べるとはどうすべきなのか。異なる主張が出てきて興味深い。話の筋を王と同時に、国際政治学や政治学を学ぶものであれば、『君主論』などの古典や、こちらの世界の異なる政治システム、為政者の有り様と比べながら読むことができるのも楽しいはずである。侵略を許さない仕組みや、愚かな為政者が道を踏み外せばシステムがリセットしてくれる都合の良さに羨望を覚え、なぜそれがこちらの世界にはないのか、と思ったりもする。精緻に編まれたルールが確固たる世界観を築いているため、安心して物語に浸れるところも良い。
ちなみに、推しは慶の陽子、巧の楽俊、延の尚隆であるが、陽子はあくまでも「為政者としての覚悟を決めた陽子」を推すのであって、それ以前ではない。同僚の先生と推しが被って嬉々として話をしていたが、どうも彼女が陽子に惹かれるポイントは私と同じところではない、ということに気付いた。研究分野の違いによる指向性なのであろうか。何はともあれ、色々な楽しみ方ができる物語である。
アニメ化もされているが、アニメ版は小説版と最初の設定がかなり異なり、小説版が好きな人は忍耐が必要である。ただ、アニメ版は『The Twelve Kingdoms』というタイトルで英語やスペイン語版が存在するらしく、海の向こうの土地で熱く語る人に出会うことがある。

『精霊の守り人』（新潮文庫）
上橋菜穂子 著　新潮社、2007年

女用心棒である短槍使いのバルサが何かに巻き込まれて旅が始まる。バルサを中心として話が進んでいく。物語としては、『精霊の守り人』から始まる全13巻のシリーズものである。上下巻に分かれているものもあるため、エピソードとしては７つである。各エピソードは緩やかにつながっているので、連続して読むと懐かしい名前や、その後の様子を知ることができるが、オムニバスとしても読むことができる。特に、『精霊の守り人』でバルサと旅するチャグムはのちにメインキャラクターになって活躍する巻もあり、彼の成長が気になる人にとっては嬉しい展開がある。
主人公の職業からも推測可能であるように、バルサは社会のはみ出しもの、マイノリティである。当然、その周りに集まるのもマイノリティになる。各エピソードによって種類は異なるが、社会からはみ出し（はみ出さされ）、社会の辺縁や底で生きる人たちが元気に動き回る。社会の枠からはみ出て生きることで得られる自由と、厳しさ、社会から締め出される理不尽さや「正義」など、普通の人であれば日常的にはあまり経験しないはずの事柄にも、時として虐げられる側から、為政者の側から、マジョリティの側から、角度をかえて示される。文化（常識や習慣も含む）が政治によってどう作られるのか、が各所で示されていて興味深い。
そういえば、上橋菜穂子はアボリジニ研究の文化人類学者だったな、と教員紹介ページを見てみたら、研究テーマは政治によって「マイノリティはどのような文化変容を被るのか」を含むものであった。なるほど、小説にもしっかり反映されている。

『旅の仲間』
J.R.R. トールキン 著　評論社、1972年

指輪物語シリーズ 他多数所蔵あり

『ホビットの冒険』の主人公ビルボとその養子フロドのお誕生日から始まる。ビルボから指輪を引き継いだフロドとその仲間たちの壮大な物語であるが、わざわざ紹介する必要もないかもしれない、ファンタジー界の有名すぎる古典作品である。ニュージーランドの美しい自然の中で撮影された迫力のある三部作映画も国際的な評価を得ている。この物語が書かれたのは第二次世界大戦を挟んだ時期、すでに70年以上経つが、時代を感じさせない。
冒険ファンタジーとして純粋にフロドと仲間たちと旅を進めていくのも良いが、よく作り込まれた世界観とその中の設定を検証しながら、出てくる種族や国の在り方を眺めていくのもまた面白い。トールキンは「完璧主義者」だったらしく、物語設定の作り込みにかなり力を入れていたという。『指輪物語』の補足的な設定がまとめられた『シルマリルの物語』というものもある。ただ、これらの設定は徐々に発展したため、初期のものとはずれがある箇所もあるらしい。
政治学や国際関係学的観点からこの物語を読むとすれば、定住を好む「弱い」一族のホビットが中心になり、強い部族との連携を深めていく様や、このミッションに「派遣」されてくる人たちの部族内でのポジション、指輪が持つ「力」の影響力、「力」を求める者、それがもたらす部族間の関係や思惑などに関する描写が実際に存在する事柄と関連づけられそうで、一種の知的ゲームのようにも感じられる。ただ、トールキンはこの物語には現実社会を反映するような政治的な含みはない、とコメントしたとされている。

It is the sequel to The Hobbit, and one of the most famous classic fantasy from England, which might not necessary to be introduced here. It’s been more than 70 years since it was published, but even today, it still shines. There is trilogy cinema adaptation filmed in New Zealand, released between 2001 and 2003, which capture the scale and dynamics of the book.
The story starts from Frodo Baggins succeeding the Ring from Bilbo Baggins, the main character in The Hobbit. Then he was set in a mission (adventure) leaving the home long and far unlike other ordinary hobbits. It will be exciting just follow Frodo’s adventure as he gathers members of his party and tackles various difficulties as they are. There are detailed background settings about history, geography, myth and characteristics of different groups created by Tolkien, and those settings are collected in The Silmarillion. It is said that he was a perfectionist; and tried to build up a neat and accurate setting for the story, so he expanded and modified background information as story progressed. So, there are some discrepancies in the settings through the series. Might be an interesting observation to make as you read.
As for a student of Politics and International Relations, the relationships between/among different groups, the reasons why the hobbits are taking main role in the mission, the power of the Ring which affect “people,” and the aims and behaviours of people who are attracted by the Ring, and how those behaviours influence on the world could be an interesting to examine. Also, could those be reflected in analysis on today’s world? It is said that Tolkien commented that there is no political indication linked to the real world, it can be an intellectual challenge for fun.

『薔薇の名前』
ウンベルト・エーコ 著 東京創元社、1990年

14世紀前半のイタリアを舞台にしたサスペンスで、修道院で起こった殺人事件を、訪問中であった修道士バスカヴィルのウィリアムが見習いのアドソと共に解決を試みる様を描く物語である。ウィリアムは教皇ヨハネス22世とフランシスコ修道会の間の神学議論に参加するため、ベネディクト会の修道院を訪れたのである。
当時の修道院におけるルールに沿って時間が進み、修道士の生活や修道院の雰囲気がよくわかる。さらに、宗派間での考え方の違いや、「知識に触れられる者」は特権意識や縄張り意識が強くあったこと、「知識」が「力」であること、容易に手に入れられない物であることが描写に出てくる。キリスト教史や、キリスト教義、当時の教会と権力者の関係、社会構造などをちょっとでも知っていると面白さが増すであろう。使い道のなさそうだった受験勉強の知識が生きる、もしくは活かせる「楽しさ」も感じてもらえるはずだ。
日本語では、多分、問題なく全部翻訳されていると思うが、英語版はラテン語のフレーズなどがそれなりの箇所に出てきて、かなり教養を要求されてつらい。オリジナルはラテン系言語のイタリア語と知って、半ば諦めの境地になった。
ちなみに、1989年にはショーン・コネリー主役で映画化されている。本学図書館にも入っているし、小説の雰囲気をよく反映している良い作品だと思うので、ぜひ「ビジュアルエイド」の意味でも、観てほしい。

It is a murder mystery in a Benedictine abbey in northern Italy, where William of Baskerville visited for theological disputation with Pope John XXII with his assistant Adso of Melk. They happened to be involved and engaged to solve the murder cases with the request from the abbot.
The story was told with the time frame of abbey-life, which gives inside views to the life of monks, differences in different catholic religious groups, “class” linked to “access to knowledge”, and professions around knowledge. Also, the members of the abbey may indicate how “globalized” Europe was at that time. To examine the elements weaved into the story, such as political connection to religion, the value of “knowledge”, and social classes which consisted of the medieval world may be an interesting side truck activity while you are following the main mystery solving efforts by William and Adso. The more you have knowledge about Christianism and Christian religious history, the more you appreciate the details Eco put in the story. One of the most difficult aspects in the novel is, Latin. There are several phrases left in Latin, and if you do not know the language, will have hard time “decoding” them – it could be said that class barriers of Europe revealed even in entertainment.
There is a wonderful film adaption in 1989, in which Sean Connery played William of Baskerville. University library has a copy of it.

『Angels & Demons』
Dan Brown 著　Atria Books、2005年

ハーバード大学教授ロバート・ラングドンが宗教史と象徴学の知識を駆使して殺人事件に取り組むシリーズ物の1作目。このシリーズは常に最新科学技術（的なもの）と宗教が話の真ん中に走っており、国家とそれに相対するキリスト教系宗教団体などが表や裏でバトルを繰り広げている。世界史選択でキリスト教宗派や騎士団の名前を一生懸命覚えた人にとっては、「あ、あれだ！」と思い当たる名前が随所に出てくるであろう。一定の教養があれば、より楽しめるシリーズでもある。
ラングドンは、大抵巻き込まれて、知らないうちに海を超えていることもある。本作も、ハーバード大学からスタートではあるが、主な舞台はバチカン市国とローマである。バチカンと言えば、教皇庁。教皇といえば、コンクラーベ。キリスト教会トップの恐ろしく世俗的（政治的）な一面と、蠢く秘密結社イルミナティに加えて、政府機関などの思惑が絡み合っている中、ラングドンが問題解決に奔走する。
大まかなところは、史実や現実に忠実なことが多いが、ところどころフィクションが入っている。どこからどこまでがノンフィクションで、どんなところが創り物か検証しながら読むのも楽しい。また、ローマとバチカンの描写があるので、イタリア旅行に行く前に読んでみるのも一興かもしれない。似た雰囲気をもっと古典的に味わいたい場合はウンベルト・エーコの『薔薇の名前』を読んでみるのも良いかもしれない。コンクラーベに関しては、Amazonに『コンクラーベ』という、タイトルそのままの内容の映画がある。教皇の死から次の教皇が選ばれるまで、を描いたものである。

The first book of the Robert Langdon series. Robert Langdon is a Harvard University professor of Symbology and Religious History, and his knowledge is “requested” by certain groups of people, such as religious groups, government organizations, scientific research organizations to solve murder cases.
This series usually have combined theme of advanced technology and religion (ancient rituals), which may represent “new” power and “old” power. Various religious groups and secret societies are active in the story, so if you know the name and history of those groups, it may be more interesting to observe to what extent Dan Brown used the actual historical facts and how much he modified and “created” to make the story more attractive.
The main part of story takes place in Rome, Italy and Vatican. There are several descriptions of well-known tourist/historic places, as well as politics of the top of Catholic church, the conclave, and secret society Illuminati. So, it can be a good reading for those who planning to visit Rome before traveling; and for the student of history to recall and exam the knowledge you learned in History class with liveliness. If you prefer more period-drama-like atmosphere, “The Name of the Rose” by Umberto Eco has similar taste. As for the conclave, there is a film titled “Conclave” by Amazon, which is drawing the death of a pope to the election of the new pope.
