What are the appealing and interesting points of Information Science and Engineering?
Students majored in Information Science and Engineering will tackle cutting edge research topics including intelligent transportation, signal processing and learning, positioning and navigation, big data analysis, etc. Studying in our college will endow you with "magical powers" such as training cars to operate automatically, coaching a computer to defeat a world champion in strategic games, locating survivals from an earthquake-damaged building, or even foreseeing future as long as you have enough amount of data.

As a booming research area, information science fascinates young researchers who are eager to devote themselves to academia. Knowledge gained in the College of Information Science and Engineering will lay a solid foundation for their future career. Except in academia, the need of information science is also growing not only in IT companies, but in consulting firms, energy corporations, and the mobile industry as well. This growing need gives students majored in information science and engineering a significant advantage in job hunting.
What are your expectations for new students entering the university? How would you like to see them progress during their time at the university?
After entering Ritsumeikan University, students are expected to be a grown man/woman. They will be able to manage their schedule independently in daily life and study. They should also be able to gain necessary knowledge about fundamental subjects such as Linear Algebra and Differential Equations, as well as advanced core subjects for information science such as Computer Vision and Operation Systems. Learning these subjects can offer students the necessary skills and shape their way of logical thinking, which would play an indispensable role in their lives. More importantly, they will be able to select a career path which could lead them to a prosperous future.

In recent years, there has been a growing interest in the research of autonomous driving. It allows vehicles to operate automatically based on artificial intelligence, computer vision, etc. Contrary to popular belief, autonomous driving is safer than manual control because human error causes most traffic accidents. Moreover, the introduction of autonomous driving enables traffic conditions to be better monitored in large scale, thereby reducing the possibility of traffic jams. Besides, autonomous driving can liberate people from steering wheels, making them spend their commuting time more efficiently.
