Due to a change in the
department responsible for operations of the Graduate Student Career
Path Support
Center (from the Office of Graduate Studies, Division of Academic Affairs to

RARA Office, the Division of Research), the Graduate Student Career Path
Support Center will be
moved from the 4th floor of the SHITOKUKAN
Hall on Kinugasa Campus to the NAKAGAWA Hall
on Suzaku Campus.

Japanese Conversation Program Fall 2019 for international graduate students was held during the period between Monday, October 21 and Tuesday, December 17 at Kinugasa Campus, Biwako-Kusatsu Campus and Osaka Ibaraki campus.

<Classes>
The level of the class was “Beginner” mainly for those who joined Ritsumeikan Univ. in September.
Students learned daily Japanese conversations mainly, and they acquired the basic conversation,
phrase that are very useful in their daily life. Many Japanese volunteer students also participated
in this program to help international students at each campus. Thanks to their support,
international students were familiar with Japanese soon and they enjoyed joining the class,
studied ambitiously and then made many Japanese friends there!
<New trial>
With the support of the Office of International Affairs, classes were held in Beyond Borders Plaza
(BBP) on each campus. BBP offer a variety of events and programs for all students, especially for
those who want to communicate with students from different countries, learn other languages and
exchange cultures each other. This Japanese program became a trigger for international students
to know BBP more and participate in their programs.
<In the Last class>
All students were preparing for the skit performance as a result of their study.
The Japanese level of students was various. However, each time they attended the class,
their Japanese skills improved a lot! They did a great job onthe skit performance!!
They also played Japanese games and a small party with volunteer students was held
as a closing this program. It was very fun and they really enjoyed them!
<General Comment>
All participants seemed very satisfied with this program. Japanese of those who joined
this class every time improved a lot! International students got the Japanese text book
for free and became friends with Japanese volunteer students.
We hope they will keep meeting with Japanese students and studying by themselves!!

Report : 2019 Fall Academic Writing Seminar
We
held “Academic Writing Seminar” at KIC and BKC on Tuesday, October 15
and
Friday, October 18.
This seminar focused on the important points of writing thesis in English, and it was
a good chance for graduate students to learn the basic knowledge and skills for writing
high quality theses. This seminar was held in English as an incentive short course for 90 minutes.
The instructor is a native English speaker and his explanation was very clear and specific.
All attendees sent the instructor what they aren’t sure and what they want to learn in advance.
Therefore, the instructor gave a class based on their questions and the class was fruitful for all.
There are many words and expression in English. It’s very difficult to choose the appropriate words
and expressions for what the writer wants to tell. All attendees realized again that it is very important
for all to use grammars properly to keep the consistency in their papers. We hope all attendees utilize
what they learned and listened during this seminar
effectively hereafter.

Please answer “Graduate Student Survey on Career Path Support Services 2019”.
We are now carrying out a questionnaire survey to improve and provide quality support for studies,
researches and careers of graduate students of Ritsumeikan University.
This is a survey conducted once every two academic years with the object of improving the quality of learning, research and career support services provided to graduate students. It is designed to give us ideas of your awareness of the availability of these services, your opinions of their quality, and your future expectations for them.
During the survey we conducted in
AY2017, we received many opinions about increasing the amount of grants,
simplifying application procedure, loosening terms and conditions for payments,
etc., and there was a change in payment of Academic Scholarship and the
targeted period of other subsidy systems.
To improve our operations to better match the graduate students’ needs, we
would appreciate your cooperation in answering this survey. We will give 500
yen Book Card to the first 500 students who answered this survey. After the
survey period, the detail of receiving will be informed to the RAINBOW ID which
is entered in this survey. Those who receive the notice, please go to the
designated offices in each campus to receive the book card between Wednesday,
November 27 and Wednesday, December 4. Please note that we will NOT send book
cards by mail.

Program Report: Japanese Conversation Program Spring 2019
during the period between Wednesday, May 15 and Thursday, July 4 at Kinugasa Campus
and Biwako-Kusatsu Campus.
In addition, half day short Japanese program was held on Saturday, June 9 on Osaka Ibaraki Campus.
Participants on KIC and BKC attended the lectures once a week for 8 weeks from May to June.
Students
learned daily Japanese conversations and basic Japanese characters such as Hiragana
and Katakana with the support of volunteer Japanese students participated in
this program to help
international students acquire and be familiar with
Japanese.
The
Japanese level of students was various. Each time they attended the class,
their Japanese
skills improved by little. Many of them did a great job on the
skit performance being conducted
on the last day of the course.
They also
played Japanese games and held a small party with volunteer students on the
same
day. It was very fun and they really enjoyed them! Most of the participants seemed very satisfied
with this program, and some
said, “This program is very
useful for international students,” and
others said “Please make this program longer and offer more
classes.”

Report: 2019 Spring English Presentation Seminar
We held “English Presentation Seminar” at KIC, BKC and OIC through June, 16(Tue) to June, 18(Thu).
There are many graduate students who are not good at speaking English, not get used to presentation
even they have more chances of having English presentations compared to undergraduate days.
The purposes of this English Presentation Seminar were to support graduate students to learn key points
for good presentation and to present in an effective way.
This seminar was held as an incentive short course. 2 classes were taught in English by a native instructor,
and his explanation was very clear and specific. All attendees gave their own presentation and could realize
the effectiveness of what they learned in the lecture. This was also a good chance for some attendees to listen to the research content of different research theme and area. The instructor told that the best way to improve their presentation is to record his/her presentation, and look and check it objectively.
We hope all attendees utilize what they learned and listened during this seminar effectively.
