日本とカナダの学校の違い

　本校IMコースでは2021年度4月より、カナダでの留学を再開しており、コロナ禍での留学に対するお問い合わせを多くいただいております。

　まだまだ、留学プログラムを再開している学校の少ない中、定期的にコロナ禍の留学について情報を発信させていただくことも本校の果たすべき役割であると考え、生徒に協力してもらいながら、『IMコース　留学体験記』を掲載しております。

この様な状況下でも，海外で頑張っている生徒の様子を覗いていただけると嬉しいです。

　さて、今日はカナダの学校の施設・ランチタイム・授業の履修方法などを日本と比較しながら紹介していきます。最初のうちは、様々な違いにワクワクしたり、戸惑ったりを繰り返す時期ですが、リポートをしてくれたIさんはどの様に感じたのでしょう。

~The difference between Japanese school and Canadian school~

I feel schools in Canada are so large. In Japan, usually school has three or four floors, but in the school that I go to, there are only 2 floors. Japan's schools are tall. Canada's schools are large. At the school that I go to, there are not only high school students but also junior high school students, so there are so many classrooms, and it is difficult to find the class that I have to go to. On the first day at school, I couldn't find the class so I asked a teacher that was walking in the hallway. She was kind, and she told me where the class was.

At lunch time, many people go outside from the school and eat lunch with their friends. The lunch time is an hour. At my school, the lunch time is from 11:30 to 12:30. Lunch is different from Japan, like "obento". Students eat sandwich, cheese and crackers, apple(they take bites of the whole apple), snacks and so on. Usually people make lunch by themselves. I make mine by myself, too.

After the class, people go back home quickly. When the bell rings, students go out from the classroom. At my school, the class ends at 2:55 and some busses start leaving the school around 3:10.

Usually, the school has two semesters (we take 4 courses in a day), but now, it is octomester, which means we take one course every day for five weeks. Now, I am studying in a Science course all day. Also, we can choose subjects that we want to take before going to school. There are many subjects and courses like guitar, indigenous art, business, and esthetic courses are rare in Japan, but we can take them here.

I feel that there are so many differences in Canadian schools compared to Japanese schools. Many things are new and interesting for me. I have learned a lot already, and look forward to learning much more.

　カナダの学校はとても広いので、最初のうちは迷ってしまう生徒が続出するのが，留学あるあるです。これまでの５ヶ月間で、海外生活にも慣れていたおかげで、きちんと人に尋ねて冷静に対応できた様ですね。分からないことは聞く！これが留学の処世術です。

　授業の取り方は、各学校のコロナ対策によって異なりますが、Iさんの学校ではオクトセメスター（８学期制）が採用されている様です。

　通常のカナダの学校では２学期制が採用されており、１年で８科目を履修することになります。各学期の中では４科目ずつを選択し、この４科目の授業が半年間にわたって、毎日同じ時間割で繰り返されるというのが通常のパターンになります。

　IMコースの生徒の留学先はカナダ東側に位置するオンタリオ州全体に分散しています。学校の様々なルールは留学エリアごとに異なる教育委員会が定めていて、コロナ対策１つをとってもエリアによって様々です。

　Iさんの教育委員会では、リポートにあった様に、５週間に渡って１つの科目だけを学び続け、次の５週間にまた別の科目を学び続けるようになっています。これを８回繰り返す計画が出されているため、８学期制と呼ばれています。もちろん、コロナの状況に応じて、今後、徐々に２学期制に戻していく様です。なるべく生徒の行動範囲を制限して、接触者数を減らすための感染症対策の１つとして考えていただければ良いと思います。８学期制以外にも４学期制（1日に２科目を学ぶ方法）もある様です。

　1日中同じ科目を学ぶのを毎日繰り返すことは慣れない感じもあるでしょうが、その分１つの学びをしっかり深めることもできそうですね。Iさんのリポートから、カナダのコロナ対策についても垣間見ることができました。

慣れないこともある留学生活ですが、しっかりフィットさせていって欲しいと思います。
