本校IMコースでは2021年度4月より、カナダでの留学を再開しており、コロナ禍での留学に対するお問い合わせを多くいただいております。

　まだまだ、留学プログラムを再開している学校の少ない中、定期的にコロナ禍の留学について情報を発信させていただくことも本校の果たすべき役割であると考え、生徒に協力してもらいながら、『IMコース　留学体験記』を掲載しております。

　この様な状況下でも，海外で頑張っている生徒の様子を覗いていただけると嬉しいです。

　4月の留学開始からあっという間に９ヶ月が経過しました。すっかり現地での生活にも慣れてきた留学生達。リポーターはTさんです。今日はランチタイムというごくごく日常的な場面を通して、異文化について考えてみましょう。

In Canada, at my school, we have an hour break for lunch from 11 to 12. Since I got friends, we have lunch together. In September and October, we were having lunch outside sitting on the lawn, but currently we have lunch in the cafeteria, because it’s snowing and cold outside. In order to get into the cafeteria, each student needs to sign in by either writing your name or scanning QR code and putting some information online. And we need to take a distance of 6 feet.

There are many choices for what you eat: you can bring some leftovers or make something or buy at the shop, or eat nothing. Most of my friends are making sandwiches or bringing what their parents make for them. Also, beside our school, like 200m away, there is a small mall, and many students are gathering inside there, because it’s warm and there is a Tim Horton’s. It is a Canadian fast food restaurant chain where we can get various meals and donuts and coffees. Every day there is a long line up on the Tim’s. It’s so popular. I go there at least once per week too.

By the way basically, we don’t eat much at lunch as students in Japan do, because school ends at 2:40 so we can have snacks when we get home, also during the classes we can have snacks or drinks, even coffee or chips. So some students don’t need to take lunch. I brought some snacks from Japan and shared with my friends before too.

In the end, Lunch time is the best time to have conversations with your friends, so try to spend as much time as you can with your friends!

　カナダの日常の様子がよく伝わってくる内容ですね。

　授業中にコーヒーやスナックを食べることが許されていることに、日本からの留学生はいつも驚いていますが、これも一つの文化です。

　カナダの学校は日本の学校と比較して非常に自由度が高い反面、一人一人の高校生が大人として扱われるため、自分で判断したり、自立することが求められます。一見、自由で良さそう！と思ってしまうことでも、視野を広げてじっくり考えてみると学校生活の何気ない場面からも、自由やルールの意味について考えるきっかけになります。

　食事やイベントやファッションなど、一目で分かる異文化もあれば、自由への考え方、ルールの意味、自立の捉え方など、その国の価値観に関わる深い異文化理解もあります。残り３ヶ月になった留学生活ですが、全員が深い異文化理解を経験して価値ある留学になることを楽しみにしています。
